Global medical file

The Global Medical File is the medical file that your GP keeps about you.

This file contains:

  • information about your health history
  • social and administrative data
  • reports from specialists and other health care providers
  • information about the treatments followed
  • information about medication taken
  • vaccinations

Based on this file, the doctor has a complete picture of your state of health and can better assess which examinations are necessary or unnecessary and whether proposed treatments do not conflict with each other.

Your GP is responsible for maintaining and coordinating your global medical file.

Collecting all your medical data by one GP contributes to an increased quality of care for your health. Your GP is best placed to organize a customized referral, and thanks to this global medical file, communication between the specialist, your GP and other healthcare providers is optimized.

The RIZIV (National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance) provides a fee for maintaining and coordinating your file. Your doctor will charge an amount determined by the RIZIV once per calendar year per patient. This amount will be fully reimbursed by your health insurance fund. In addition, you will benefit from a reduction on the co-payment for each consultation with your GP. If you move or change GP, the file can be passed on to the new GP at your request.

Specialists are not required to pass on data to the GP. The GMD offers an instrument to achieve more exchange. As a patient, you can ask the specialist to share his findings with the GP and thus allow for better monitoring of your illness and health condition.

If you are registered in our practice, we will place a summary of your medical file on COZO. Please inform us if you do not want this.
